SUBJECT:
Connecting the NWH2210 Wireless Ethernet Client (WEC)
to a device
other than a workstation computer (for example, a print
server or network
digital camera).
QUESTION:
Can I use the NWH2210 to give a device other than a workstation
computer -- an Ethernet-equipped printer, for example
-- a wireless
interface?
ANSWER:
Yes, you can use the NWH2210 to give any Ethernet-capable
device
-- even a printer, headless server, or webcam -- an interface
to your
wireless LAN (WLAN). Here's a quick overview of the setup
process:
1. Connect the WEC to a normal workstation computer
on which the
WEC Utility is installed.
2. Configure the WEC in the usual way, and then carry
out the extra
steps described further on. Be sure to click Apply so
all settings
are saved in the WEC's non-volatile memory.
3. Disconnect the WEC and connect it to the target device.
To make the WEC work with a non-workstation device, you
must (in
addition to other configuration steps necessary for your
WLAN) set it to
activate its wireless interface automatically upon power-up,
and to keep
that interface active all the time. Do this as follows:
1. Go to the WEC Utility's Configuration panel and choose
Ethernet.
The Ethernet Access Control dialog box will appear.
2. Under Idle Time, select (enable) the "Always
Connect" option.
3. At the bottom of the dialog box, select (enable)
the control that
makes the WEC activate its wireless interface automatically
when
powered up.
This control is labeled differently in different versions
of the
WEC Utility. It may be labeled "Connect with AP on
Startup," "Turn
on Radio Automatically," or something similar. The
meaning is the
same, and the control is always at the bottom of the Ethernet
Access Control dialog box. Make sure it is checked before
going
on.
4. Choose OK, carry out any remaining configuration
steps (SSID and
encryption setup, for example), choose Apply, and exit
the WEC
Utility.
Note: If your WLAN operates in ad-hoc (computer-to-computer)
mode,
you must have WEC firmware version 0.22 or later and WEC
Utility
version 1.3.4.2 or later for the steps described further
on to work.
To check the version numbers, connect the WEC and start
the WEC
Utility. The WEC's firmware version appears at the bottom
of the
Configuration panel; the WEC Utility's version number
is shown on
the About panel.
WEC firmware version 0.22 is available in the form of
a
self-extracting compressed file at the following URL:
http://www.ndc.com.tw/update/drivers/2210fw022.exe
If necessary, download 2210fw022.exe, run it, and download
the
resulting file to the WEC using the WEC Utility's Upgrade
panel.
To obtain the latest version of the WEC Utility, contact
NDC
Technical Support by e-mail (techsupt@ndc.com.tw). In
your
message, please note your WEC's serial number (marked
S/N on
the base of the WEC).
To test the configuration, connect the WEC to the target
device and
"ping" the target device from a workstation
computer.
Note: If you wish to ping the target device from the
computer you used
to configure the WEC, you must first remove the target
device's IP
address from the computer's ARP (Address Resolution Protocol)
table. Do this by opening an "MS-DOS Prompt"
(or "Command
Prompt") window and issuing the following command:
arp -d <ip_address_of_target_device>
You can then be sure of accurate results from the ping
test.
