SUBJECT:

How to configure the Ad-hoc (peer-to-peer) mode and Infrastructure mode?

QUESTION:

How to configure the Ad-hoc (peer-to-peer) mode and Infrastructure mode?

ANSWER:

1. The way to configure the Ad-hoc (peer-to-peer) mode:
(1) Install the driver and utility of WLAN adapter properly.

(2) Make sure the TCP/IP protocol is installed properly from Network Properties of Control Panel. Assign an IP address for the WLAN adapter manually.
Please note that you must assign the IP address with *the same subnet* to the computers running ad-hoc mode.
For example, assign IP address 192.168.1.1 with submask 255.255.255.0 to one WLAN adapter and IP address 192.168.1.2 with submask 255.255.255.0 to another WLAN adapter.

(3) Please make sure "Files and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" service is installed properly from Network properties of Control Panel, so you can link the computers running ad-hoc mode and access their shared resources by using Network Neighborhood.

(4) Use NDC utility to assign the same Network mode (ad-hoc mode), SSID (Domain Name), Channel or WEP keys (Encryption) to the WLAN adapters.

(5) After finishing above steps, you can use PING command to test the wireless connect and Network Neighborhood to access the shared resources.
For example, open Command Prompt from Start menu and type "ping 192.168.1.1" command to test the IP address or others.

2. The way to configure the Infrastructure mode:
(1) Install the driver and utility of WLAN adapter properly.

(2) Please make sure the TCP/IP protocol is installed properly from Network Properties of Device Manager.

(3) If there is not a DHCP server connected behind the AP (Access Point), please assign an IP address to the WLAN adapter manually. Please note that you must assign the IP address with *the same subnet* to the computers in the same wireless domain.
For example, assign IP address 192.168.1.1 with submask 255.255.255.0 to one WLAN adapter and IP address 192.168.1.2 with submask 255.255.255.0 to another WLAN adapter.

(4) Please make sure "Files and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" service installed properly to the WLAN adapter from Network properties of Control Panel, so you can link those computers and access their shared resources by using Network Neighborhood.

(5) Use AP utility to assign a SSID (Domain Name), Channel or WEP keys (Encryption) to the AP.

(6) Use NDC utility of the WLAN adapter to assign the same SSID, Channel or WEP keys as the AP and Infrastructure Network mode.

(7) Check the wireless connection from the Link indicator of NDC utility.

(8) After finishing steps above, you can use PING command to test the wireless connect and Network Neighborhood to access the shared resources.
For example, open Command Prompt from Start menu and type "ping 192.168.1.1" command to test the IP address or others.
