NATIONAL DATACOMM CORPORATION (NDC) today announced its
InstantWave 11Mbps Wireless Ethernet Client (WEC) for wireless
network providers to enhance their public access solutions
and pave the way for additional revenue-generating opportunities.
The WEC acts as a wireless interface for any device equipped
with basic Ethernet capabilities (regardless of operating
system) to transport data packets transparently. No extra
drivers or WLAN configuration is needed for wireless operation.
The WEC is perfectly suited for use in hard-to-wire industrial
environments where a wireless connection is required and
where most Ethernet-ready equipment (industrial PCs, scanners,
etc.) doesn't come with a floppy/CD-ROM drive, or in wireless
hotspots that enable handheld and notebook computer users
to connect to the Internet from public places such as
airports, cafes, hotels, and public libraries.
The demand for wireless LAN access is growing every day,
driven by an increasingly mobile workforce. According
to IDC, 45 million mobile business professionals are working
today, averaging more than 280 million business trips
every year. Analysts estimate that there will be more
than 1 billion mobile devices in use by 2003 and that
the wireless LAN market will grow to more than $2 billion.
"We firmly believe that all-wireless is the next
generation in public area connectivity and the WEC enables
wireless network providers to serve all notebook computer
users, whether or not they are wirelessly enabled today,"
said Changhua Chiang, CEO & president of NDC.
"For those traveling with notebook computers without
wireless capabilities, network providers now can offer
the option of providing a zero-configuration WEC suitable
for checkout from a reception counter. The WEC can also
be deployed at an airport mileage club, restaurant, or
boarding gate together with wireless access points for
a more reliable and secure broadband wireless connection
service," Chiang added.
Deploying the WEC generates additional revenue opportunities
for network operators by making the service accessible
to a much broader population of non-subscription-based
users.
The InstantWave Wireless Ethernet Client (WEC) is part
of the NDC InstantWave wireless product line and offers
the following features:
.Converts Wired Ethernet Data to Wireless Format Effortlessly:
Adds wireless capability to Ethernet devices without driver
installation and configuration hassle.
- Converts Wired Ethernet Data to Wireless Format
Effortlessly:
Adds wireless capability to Ethernet devices without
driver installation and configuration hassle.
- Minimizes Wireless Security Concerns in Public
Areas
For public service applications, SSID and Security (WEP)
settings are usually given to each user who wants to
connect to a wireless network. In such situations a
malicious user can easily obtain these settings. Using
a WEC avoids the need to disclose settings to the public,
making wireless communication more secure.
- Remote Configuration (Optional):
Allows network administrators to manage each WEC (in
the same subnet) remotely from a single terminal.
- Ease of Management:
DHCP Client Support: Automatically obtains a new IP
address from a DHCP server.
- Auto-IP Address Assignment:
If a DHCP server fails, the WEC will automatically generate
a new IP address within the same domain.
- Service Discovery Support:
With Service Discovery function support, a device connected
to the WEC is automatically scanned for and found by
an InstantWave 11Mbps Access Point.
